The FDA classifies caffeine as both a food additive AND a drug because it is a central nervous system stimulant. Like other drugs, caffeine alters how the brain and body function and changes mood and behavior. Not surprisingly, the main purpose of caffeine is to increase alertness and stave off drowsiness.
