The Talk’s Sharon Osbourne…Glee’s Heather Morris…Little House on the Prairie’s Melissa Gilbert…

All of these celebrities went public with their decision to downsize in the chest department. The backpedaling may seem kind of surprising, considering these famous faces opted for implants in the first place.

So why the sudden change of heart? Osbourne woke up one morning to discover an implant leaked into the wall of her stomach. Morris said her breast enhancement left her feeling sore on a regular basis. Gilbert maintains that she parted ways with her implants for the sake of her health and because she no longer liked the way they looked or felt.

Ironically, it is becoming just as trendy to say goodbye to saline and silicone as it is to enhance those assets.

Reasons for Breast Implant Removal (also known as Explant)

Women “explant” for many different reasons. In a growing number of cases, women have a combination of factors for wanting to go au naturel. Consider some common reasons for explanting.

·      Houston, We Have Problems: We’ve all heard the stories about leaking implants, illness, emergency surgeries and other nightmares women with implants experience. While the quality and constitution of the implants themselves have improved and health problems are regularly studied, reviewed and remedied, there is no guarantee when a woman gets implants that she will not encounter ongoing complications, the need to replace implants or potentially serious health problems. This consideration may keep many younger women from jumping on the implant bandwagon, and it is also sparking some desire in current implant owners to explant, ASAP.

·      Lack of Connection: Some younger women in their 20s and 30s describe the feeling of “never connecting” to their new breasts or experiencing a sense of having a foreign element in their body that won’t go away. These women want the implants removed so they can feel “at one” with their own bodies again.

·      Over the Hills: Women in their 40s and 50s often experience drooping or sagging of their implants that causes them to look and feel matronly and unattractive. The alternative of having smaller and more natural breasts can become appealing to implant owners at this age.

·      It’s Complicated: A very common reason for explanting is when women experience complications with their implants. Deflation or capsular contracture (which involves hard, abnormal or painful breasts) can cause discomfort and embarrassment, paired with additional medical intervention requirements. Nonsurgical remedies such as weight loss or special minimizer bras often don’t work or don’t work well enough to increase comfort, and explanting becomes the desired solution.

·      High Maintenance: For many women, the initial cost of getting implants was manageable, but the required upkeep becomes burdensome. At such a crossroads, the most suitable remedy becomes removing the implants.

·      Pains with Gains: Especially in the case of larger implants, there may be uncomfortable and intolerable pain in the back, chest or shoulders. Explanting promises relief from suffering.

·      Medical conditions: There are some medical concerns that limit a woman’s ability to maintain the implants with required surgeries and upkeep. In this case, explanting may become a necessary form of medical care.

·      It’s Time For a Change: Some women may experience growth in the breast tissue after menopause. “The change” can make implants undesirable.

·      Objects May Appear Larger Than They Are: Larger breasts can make some women appear heavier than they actually are. For these women, the implants become aesthetically displeasing, and removal can create a thinner and more natural look.

·      Buyer’s Remorse: This is more common in younger women, but there can sometimes be a feeling of regret about a decision made too hastily, and the implant owner will want the implants removed. This type of explanting typically occurs rather quickly after implanting, as the women never feels fully comfortable with her decision or her newly altered body.

·      Let’s Get Physical: For runners, dancers, yogis, golfers or other women who participate in any type of regular physical activity, larger breasts can be cumbersome. Implants can limit the range of motion in the arms and can slow the woman down.

·      Cups Runneth Over: With the multitude of breast-enhancing bras available on today’s market, there is little need for permanent remedies to small-breastedness. It’s a wonderful thing to be able to wear the Triple Boost Ultimate Cleavage Bra to enhance your cup by three sizes on Friday night, yet still be able to sport smaller, more convenient breasts for Saturday morning’s yoga class. There is no permanent commitment, less cost and no upkeep. Progress is a great thing.

·      Out of Style: While the '90s boasted big-breasted beauties like Pamela Anderson in Baywatch, today’s fashion icons are more likely to be smaller-breasted models. Even Playboy has revamped their typical centerfold images to show less generously endowed women. A more natural look is pervading the global fashion industry, and this just might be a fashion trend with staying power. Women with breast implants do not fit into this landscape, hence the rush for explanting procedures.

There are many reasons why women are ditching their implants and doing so publicly. A new awareness of health concerns and a growing appreciation for the natural beauty of the human form encourage a return to basics. An increasing number of women are choosing natural breasts over implants, and the result can only be better overall health. Fewer reasons to go under the knife for surgical procedures and implant upkeep as well as less risk of complications related to implants means healthier lives for the women ditching the boob jobs.

If you’re considering having your implants removed, the most important factor to consider is how you feel. If you are uncomfortable with your breasts, and therefore your body, you should talk to your doctor and explain your concerns.

Your physician may encourage you to explant at that time or may have other suggestions for you to help make a decision. Gather as much information as you need to make a final determination, but know that you’re in good company in your quest for a more natural you. Just remember that it is ultimately your decision and no one else’s. Only you reside in your body, and you should be comfortable there.
